Two New Dog Breeds Join AKC Family – Philly.com (blog)

Good news for all of you dog enthusiasts - the American Kennel Club (AKC) announced that two new dog breeds have joined its pack.

The organization officially recognized the Coton de Tulear and Wirehaired Vizsla, bumping the total number of dog breeds in its family up to 180.

"The AKC is excited to recognize these friendly, outgoing breeds, giving dog lovers everywhere even more choices to fit their lifestyle," said AKC Spokesperson Gina DiNardo in a statement. "While they differ in exercise and grooming needs, both are sweet, loyal, loving family companions."

The Coton de Tulear originated on the island of Madagascar and was originally owned only by nobleman. Cotons are small, sweet dogs with a lot of heart and they thrive on human companionship. These pups make loyal family pets and get along well with children, as well as other dogs. The Coton joins the Non-Sporting Group.

An athletic breed with an excellent nose for hunting and tracking, the Wirehaired Vizsla joins the Sporting Group. The breed originated in Hungary as a hunting dog that could withstand extreme weather and rough field conditions, which is why they have a long, dense, wiry coat. These dogs are gentle, outgoing, and friendly. Because of their athletic nature, Wirehaired Vizslas do best with active families.

Both breeds will be eligible to compete in AKC events beginning June 30th of this year.
