The Auvergne Pointer is a large and relatively heavy gundog, with distinctive coloration and markings. It is an important breed characteristic that the ears and the area around the eyes are black. Elsewhere on the body, blue roaning, resulting from overlapping black and white hairs, is desirable. This sturdy breed can be distinguished from its larger relative not only by its size, but also by its coloration, which is invariably liver and white. It is otherwise of similar type, being a powerful, muscular dog very well suited to working in the field for long periods.
