SALT LAKE CITY — Animal welfare advocates are welcoming a new state law that prevents cities and towns from banning specific dog breeds.

Advocates say the law, which was passed last year, ends discrimination against dogs like pit bulls that are perceived by some as more aggressive.

Gene Baierschmidt with the Humane Society of Utah says dogs of any breed or size can be vicious.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1Bf3X6N) 10 Utah cities had bans on pit bulls before the law nullified them on Jan. 1.
