SINGAPORE: A teacup poodle, a Leonberger and a Newfoundland - these are some of the rare and lesser seen pet breeds that were featured at the Unique Pet Breed Showcase on Tuesday (Mar 17).

The showcase, held at The Wagington, was a preview to the Pet Expo 2015, which happens this Friday to Sunday at Singapore Expo Hall 8.

This chart, from David McCandless' fascinating new book Knowledge is Beautiful, ranks 87 dog breeds and compares those rankings to the actual popularity of those breeds in the US.

The ranking is based on a number of factors: trainability, life expectancy, lifetime cost (including the price of food and grooming), and suitability for children, among others.

NEW DELHI: A special breed of military canine that is credited to have helped US navy SEALs in sniffing out al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden's hideout in Pakistan, is now part of the country's elite counter-terror and counter-hijack commando operations force NSG.

The special actions force has recently inducted and trained close to a dozen of these four-footed soldiers called - the Belgian Malinois - and they will form an essential part of counter-terrorist operations that the 'black cat' commandos of the National Security Guard (NSG) undertake in the future.

Purebred dog breeders are at a loss after the enforcement of the rules for sending puppies to the United States changed without notice.

The Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC) requires puppies entering the U.S. receive the rabies vaccination when they are only three months old. Following their shots, the dogs must undergo a 30 day waiting period before they can cross the border.
