You might not be able to teach an old dog new tricks, as the cliché says, but you can teach almost any dog to obey basic commands, trainers and handlers agree.

It's best to begin training a dog at the puppy stage. Start when the puppy is about seven weeks old and keep the daily lessons simple and short, about five to 10 minutes long.

Yesterday the first five of the top 10 dog breeds of 2014 as the AKC, American Kennel Club, recently announced were listed on Examiner. Today is the second half of that list, number six through 10. The American people have chosen these dogs more often than any other dog breeds out there.

    OLYMPIA — Think of it as profiling by dog breed.

    At least that's what Rep. Sherry Appleton, D-Poulsbo, believes she is addressing in her bill to forbid local governments from making specific dog breeds illegal.

    Yes, we're talking about pit bulls.

    "The best dog I've had in my life was a pit bull,".

    At least two of the four new breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club recently seem family-friendly. And the other two might work in a pinch.

    The four breeds are the Spanish Water Dog, Cirneco dell’Etna, Bergamasco and Boerboel. They have been given full AKC recognition and were OK’d to begin participation in AKC events Jan.

    NEW YORK — A Spanish farm and fishing dog, a Sicilian rabbit-hunting breed, an Italian sheepdog with a distinctive matted coat and a rugged South African watchdog are joining the American Kennel Club pack.

    The kennel club announced Wednesday that the Spanish water dog, the Cirneco dell'Etna (cheer-NAY-koh-dehl-eht-nah), the Bergamasco and the Boerboel (BUHR'-buhl) will become recognized breeds Jan.
