Labradors Rule, Boxers Drool? This Year's Most Popular Dog Breeds – Global Animal

By Rebecca Hartt on October 30, 2014

(DOG BREEDS/DOGS/LIFE WITH PETS) The results are in, and they may surprise you! Trupanion, a pet insurance company, conducted a study to find out what the most popular dog breeds are across North America.

Although some may assume that purebred dogs like Labrador Retrievers would be most preferred by guardians, mixed breeds take the top spot as the most popular dog breed in America. Mutts not only tend to live longer because of their genetic makeups, but they also have unique characteristics and personalities. Since adopting mixed breed dogs provides homes to animals in need, it’s no wonder so many Americans love them!

Adopting a pet is always the best option, and results show that many families are already choosing to adopt, rather than buy a pet dog. Read on to learn more about the most popular dog breeds across the U.S., and find out what breed is most common in your area. — Global Animal

Trupanion Shares Most Popular and Preferred Dog Breeds across North America

Trupanion, a company that provides medical insurance for cats and dogs, found that aside from mixed breeds, the Labrador Retriever tops the list of most popular dogs across North America. Not surprisingly, this trusty sidekick also showed up as the most popular dog in many major cities across the country. However, when looking at particular regions, data found that each city has its own particular tastes when it comes to breeds, reflecting the lifestyle and culture of the region.

“While it’s no surprise that Labs and Goldens remain popular, we’re seeing a lot of variation by region in terms of what’s popular in that particular area,” said TJ Houk, Vice President of Analytics at Trupanion. “Mixed breeds are popping up everywhere from the Yorkipoo, to the Schnoodle, to the Labradoodle.”

The top dog breeds across the U.S., according to the Trupanion database, are:

1. Mixed breeds
2. Labrador Retriever
3. Golden Retriever
4. Yorkshire Terrier
5. Shih Tzu
6. German Shepherd
7. Chihuahua
8. English Bulldog
9. Maltese
10. Boxer

While the most popular dogs remain fairly consistent across the country, each region has its own particular tastes, and some breeds show up more often in certain cities. While they aren’t necessarily more popular than a Golden Retriever, across the nation, the breeds below are far more frequent in their respective city than the rest of the U.S.

East Coast

From the Big Apple to Bean Town, the French Bulldog and the Puggle respectively take home top honors in each city. Further south, North Carolina favors the Basset Hound while folks down in Florida are more likely to own an American Bulldog than the rest of the United States.

West Coast

Like New Yorkers, San Franciscans love the French Bulldog, while Los Angeles plays it cool with other small breeds. In Seattle, there are more Alaskan Malamutes than the rest of North America; these sled dogs were bred for use hauling heavy freight because of their strength and endurance. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi, known as a herding dog breed that originated in Pembrokeshire, Wales, are popular in both Seattle and San Francisco.

The Bulldog family is at it again taking home top honors in the Midwest as a dog you might see strutting around Chicago. The Schnoodle (yes that’s a cross between a Schnauzer and a Poodle), comes in second while English Springer Spaniels and Germain Pointers are a favorite amongst folks in the Minneapolis/St. Paul region.
