Vets are urging prospective dog owners to steer clear of flat-faced breeds such as pugs, bulldogs and shih-tzus, which can experience debilitating health problems related to their characteristics.

Such dogs, known properly as brachycephalic breeds, have surged in popularity after a rise in celebrity ownership, but their shortened muzzles put them at risk of breathing and eating difficulties, as well as eye problems.

Welcoming a pet into a home can be a joyous event. Companion animals have a way of assimilating into a family rather quickly. Some prospective pet owners spend months researching the type of breed they prefer, while others prefer to adopt mixed-breed dogs from a nearby animal shelter.

Purebred and mixed breed dogs both make great pets.

When you encounter a giant dog breed, it is quite a sight to behold. It’s hard to imagine that a dog can have such long legs, huge paws and, well, just be so big. But often, the first words that pop out of peoples’ mouths at the sight of a Great Dane, Mastiff or other huge breed are the same old things that the dogs’ owners have heard a million times — and would probably be happy to never hear again.
